Yass Urban Landcare Group

Projects:

Yass Urban Landcare Streambank Rehabilitation Project
Program: Murray-Darling 2001
Description: Rivers and streams in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment are degrading as a result of the spread of exotic vegetation, declining native vegetation and stock access. In particular seeding willows have become a major problem with the potential to severely impact on the stability and ecology of riparian systems. The aim of this project is to restore a vital, highly visible section of the Yass River by removing the problem of willows and replacing them with a diversity of native riparian vegetation as well as fencing off sections to manage stock access. This will lead to a number of broad environmental outcomes including reduced stream bank erosion, improved water quality, retention of riverine habitat and reduced localised flooding.
